One of my ELL’s was emphatic that she did not want to do a required presentation. So I compromised: if she wrote up the work, she and I could do the explanation and answer the classes questions together. Afraid, I think, that the experience would be traumatic for her, I did too much talking. At one point she broke in to explain something because she didn’t like how I was doing it, and I should have sat down, but didn’t. Afterward I asked her if I should have let her speak more. She smiled and nodded.

Oops. I should have just encouraged her to do it on her own in the first place. The best I can hope for is that her frustration at not speaking will be a good replacement for her previous reluctance to speak.

Live and learn ….
